There’s too much to be done and not enough time so our go to method is to multitask. There are “good” multitaskers and “bad” multitaskers, but could the reality be that all multitaskers are bad? Devora Zack wrote a book called “Singletasking” where she writes that multitasking is not only not a good thing, but very harmful. Here are four reasons why you shouldn’t multitask.
- It is good to make yourself commit to one task. It makes you prioritize and decide what matters most. The amount of effort you put into an experience can affect your health, relationships, and other aspects of your personal life.
- The stress of being overloaded with too many tasks and thoughts can actually have negative affects on your brain. “The prefrontal cortex shrinks from the stress of constant overload. The amygdala — the integrative center for emotions — takes over, flooding the brain with negative emotions.”
- Multitasking creates an unsettled, confused, restless, or uncontrolled mind.
- You always want to strive to have a clear mind. If you’re in the middle of something and you have a good idea it’s OK to write it down and come back to it later after you have finished the original task.
